A NOTE ON AYURVEDA

Ayurveda , the knowledge on Life- originated in India years ago . Ayurveda explains about the wholesome as well as unwholesome factors of life. The people of that time had conversation even with Creator using their special sense and Ayurveda originated as a result of that conversations. Their need in upgrading knowledge on life increased due to the lack of ability in understanding natural phenomena and solutions. The Creator , recollected all the keys for opening questions on Life and send it to human beings through Prajapathi, a visible form of Creator.( Those who do not believe in Creator can consider Nature as the supreme power – The process of origin of Ayurveda is unable to explain with Modern scientific terms , like Secret of life is not explained by anyone with a Theory)
Ayurveda is based on Pancha Mahabhoota Sidhanta( five element concept- Prithvi-Earth or all solid forms , Ap –water or all liquid forms, Teja-fire or all forms of heat, Vayu – Air or gases or moving energy, Akasha -space), Tridosha Sidhanta (Three humors) and Loka – Purusha –samanya sidhanta( The theory of similarity of Universe and Human beings or Creatures).
Ayurveda is also a science, a science based on Indian scientific laws . It follows the scientific rules in all aspects . Science when defined we get this definition- observation , identification, description, experimental , investigation and theoretical explanation of a natural phenomena- in case of Ayurveda , the basic facts were send to human beings from Creator or Nature and the upgrading was done according to the above explanation of science.
The basic concept of Pancha Mahabhoota Sidhanta is followed in all Ayurveda ideas. In Panchamahabhuta sidhanta ANU or KANA (equivalent –atom) is the smallest indivisible particle and the stable indivisible smallest form is TANMATRA (equivalent-molecule). KANA concept was introduced by KANADA , the founder of VAISHESHIKA DARSANA (philosophy) . According to famous Australian Indologist A.L Basham many Indian ideas were equivalent to the Modern Physics concepts. We have the Bohr’s Atom model, when it failed to explain stability, the more stable Quantum mechanical model was accepted , the 100% stability of each model can be explained only through calculations for each atoms. So Kanada model, the key to pancha mahabhuta concept also must also have high consideration .Concept of Panchamahabhuta Sidhanta can be explained based on that above mentioned Indian concept which proves the existence of Panchamahabhuta Tanmatras
.
PANCHAMAHABHUTAS (FIVE MAJOR ELEMENTS)
PRITHVI( all solid forms)
AP ( all liquid forms )
TEJA( all forms of heat/ fire)
VAYU ( all air or gases which are moving in nature)
AKASHA( space to occupy)
The Pancha Mahabhoota Sidhanta is difficult to understand , if tried to learn with Modern Science , but simple using Indian Science. Pancha Mahabuta Sidhanta explains that everything in this Universe is made of Five above mentioned elements in different combination. Life along with Panchamahabhuta creates a living being. Ayurveda is applied only to living beings which has a mind and body with Life. Life is given by Creator of Universe and Mind is given by Parents to living beings. Indian science says that the origin of life began from Nothingness and intention of the universe to form higher states of occurrence . The expansion of Universe is making all the changes , changes in living as well as non- living objects.
Example to understand :
Wood is having more Prithvi, Water is having more Ap, sunlight is having more Teja , but basically they all are formed of Panchamahabbhutas . The predominance of each bhoota determines the form of substances.
THREE DOSHA CONCEPT (THREE HUMORS OF BODY)
The factors which can maintain the normalcy, increase and decrease the rate of functions of body and mind are called Doshas. The concept of Dosha is very important in Ayurveda . In Ayurveda three dosas are there , VATA, PITTA & KAPHA .That humor which generates movement or control movement is called Vata, that which makes transformations is called as Pitta , the heat related humor and all the solid and liquid elements in the body, which provides stability is called Kapha. Three dosha concept also follow Panchamahabhuta Sidhanta.
Example to understand :
Movement is done by Vata dosa, Vision is done by fire element Pitta dosa, Stability of body and the mass is given by Kapha .
MAN IS THE EPITOME OF UNIVERSE
We human beings are made of same entities as of Universe. The Human life is copy of Universe . According to Indian science and Ayurveda , It says, what all this Universe has, a human being also posses it , consider the Pancha Mahabhoota sidhanta here, both have solid entities, liquids, heat, air and space . Universe always interacts with human beings, when the interation is normal we say it as Health and when it is abnormal we say it as Disease.
Example to understand :
Consider Universe as one object and a living being as a part of it , so both Universe and Living being must have same components.
Why I followed Ayurveda:
It took years for me to understand the Knowledge on Life and I always tried to share my ideas , the people who have an insight in this Science or those who are selected by Nature can only understand what is Ayurveda and how it works. The thought of understanding all creatures as Panchamahabhuta combination made me to think of natural ways of healing. My thought was, I am from NATURE so only NATURAL materials or phenomena can do some usefull transformation in me. I observed that in this whole nature no other creations are going behind synthesized products except human beings . Conversion of an energy form to other is a beautiful idea derived by man , for the above purpose he used the available natural materials in different molded forms, up to that point I liked human ideas, but after some point man started synthesizing chemicals to replace food, medicines, cosmetics , to get faster and higher than other competent , from there the human mind and body started getting polluted.
1) Natural extracts were used as medicine earlier , but when it started synthesizing both the product as well as the by products started harming human life. Look the improper disposal factory wastes affecting lifes of many living beings.
2) Plastic production also is harmful
3) Refrigerator of this modern Era also causing negative effects in Human life
4) Junk foods , lack of Natural knowledge, Lack of availability of space and opportunity ,Capitalism , Population explosion and Mental as well as Physical instability trapped human beings.
All the above mentioned factors keep man away from nature
To know Nature I started to follow Her and my seek began with introduction to a new page called AYURVEDA. We all are a part of this nature so only nature can add some positive or needed changes in us. So I followed nature and Ayurveda. When we are free , we must take a break from our busy life and look into nature , the land , fresh air , the rivers , the sky, the natural materials and must take a pledge to come back to nature friendly life. So be a natural lover then the Nature will make a secret call to you to know her. From there you will understand what Ayurveda is and how it works . So I was called by nature to meet her and know her and follow her.
HOW TO START
1) Timely sleep
2) Reduce over dependency on technology - eg:- play real games instead of mobile games
3) Stop having chemicals as food or drink -eg:- instead of having a cola , drink a lemon juice or sugar water .
4) Take at least a ten minute break daily to think of yourself , family and aim and nature , are so of simple ways to start a nature friendly life.
These are some simple tips to get out of busy life, which in turn helps us to think of Nature .
AYURVEDA TREATMENT
Ayurveda considers the body and mind together . The medicines and mental strength together cures the deceases. Ayurveda is a life science which can be followed by everyone. Personally I follow all good and helpful ideas through which I can gain knowledge or help my patients. The technique of Surgery , comparing Planets with human life , Radiology , Yoga , Marma, and some Traditional Medical Science with proper knowledge and a base are all good fields for goodness of human beings. I respect all the above mentioned ideas. The concept of not considering the body as a whole mechanism is the only idea that is not suitable for Natural life or Ayurveda.
Ayurveda consider human body as a single unit while planning a treatment or considering an individual , for example- for a person with stomach ache the health condition of that particular individual is assessed fully ( mentally and physically) The designed treatment will end up only after attaining complete health. Ayurveda is nothing magical, it only explains some measures taken to stay healthy .All individuals in all countries can follow Ayurveda with available natural materials surrounding them.
1) Honey can be used for reducing fat
2) Wheat food items can be selected by Diabetic individuals
3) Black pepper can be used for indigestion
4) Even alcohol is used in controlled doses as medicine - such measures are the basic application of Ayurveda .
Ayurveda explains the effects of wholesome as well as unwholesome acts and teaches us to follow the wholesome methods. Ayurveda categories diseases into Sadhya (curable) and Asadhya (non–curable) ..
All diseases are not curable , all the medical sciences approve this fact , Ayurveda has a perfect order of curable as well as non – curable diseases. The disorders which are controllable are placed under Non-curable category .
Ayurveda uses Tridosa( three humors) concept to treat diseases. All diseases are categorized according to its origin with predominance of Dosa ( humors).
Vata- dryness, lightness, dry coldness, roughness, subtle nature and movement are caused by Vata .
Pitta- little unctuous , rapidness, hot , light , fetid smell ,flowing and liquid nature is of Pitta.
Kapha- unctuousness , wet cold, heaviness, slow action, sliminess, stability etc are features of Kapha Dosha.
All movements like – action with limbs, breathing , excretion , thoughts is done by Vata
Digestion, vision, Thirst, taste , colour is controlled by Pitta.
Stability, unctuousness, joint lubrication etc is done by Kapha
Basically movement is controlled by Vata, transformation with heat by Pitta , stability or mass by Kapha.
Decreased doshas - When Vata is decreased in the body, tiredness, less activeness in talking will be there. When Pitta decreases - less digestion, coldness, complexion decrease and in kapha decrease dizziness, feel of emptiness, less stability of joints are felt .
Pitta- Burning sensation, Temperature , puss formation , sweat ,yellow colour are some of the functions of Pittacn for heat , tremor , sleeplessness will be there . In Pitta increase yellowish discoloration , excess hunger and thirst can be seen and in Kapha excess sleep, indigestion, heaviness to body , coldness to the body , weak joints etc can be felt.
The functions of doshas – Vata – different kinds of pain, tremor, astringent taste in mouth , brown or red colour can be seen when eyes are closed .
Pitta- burning sensation, temperature , puss formation , sweat ,yellow colour are some of the functions of Pitta
Kapha- unctuousness , heaviness , immobility, swelling, paleness in body, salty taste to mouth , chronic nature are the features of Kapha Dosha.
Sites of Dosha – Even If they are placed all over the body, they have particular seats- Above hrudaya ( heart ) – Kapha is predominant , In between hrudaya ( heart ) and nabhi ( navel ) Pitta is predominant and below nabhi ( navel ) Vata is predominant . Thorax is the seat of Kapha, Nabhi is of Pitta and Pakvashayam is of Vata
Treatment principle on Dosha basis - Vata Dosha basic treatment principle- Oleation , Sudation , and medicines with Sweet, Sour and Salt taste can be used for treatment and as the major treatment Vasthi (enema) is done .
Pitta- All cold potency therapies are used for Pitta, medicines having Sweet , Astringent and Bitterness are used in the treatment of Pitta , Virechana ( Purgation) is the major treatment.
Kapha- heat therapies are used , medicines with Astringent , Bitter and Acrid taste can be used for Kapha treatment, Vamana ( emesis ) is the major therapy.
All the above mentioned ideas helps to plan Ayurveda treatment. Similar to above mentioned Dosha concept, Dosha based Constitution (Prakriti) is also there – Vata Prakriti, Pitta Prakriti, Kapha prakriti and combination of Two and Three dosa is also there . To assess Prakriti or constitution basic format is added in Ayurveda Textbooks Unstableness, Intelligence, Broken hair , Travel love, music , basically lean body are some of the qualities of vata constitution , Pitta will have excess thirst and hunger , cleanliness , caring, over sweating , anger etc will be there . In Kapha the person will be calm , over muscular , always will follow the ways of truth only, over control in hunger and thirst and stability will be there. ( detailed description is there in Ashtangahrudaya Sareera Sthana)
Also we must consider the Land (Desa) of the person who comes to us for Ayurveda advice . The predominant Dosha of people in such places can be assessed considering the land- Vata , Pitta and Kapha predominant lands are there . Dry land with little vegetation is considered as Vata predominant land , desert without vegetation is Pitta predominant land , Kapha predominant will be with excess vegetation and more water bodies. All living places on earth can be categorized under this . A land where people has all dosas in moderate level is the best Land - Sadharana Desam – normal land
.
The diagnosing case sheet of Ayurveda consists of an assessing chart
- Dooshyam – the vitiated tissue ( blood, muscle, bone, nervous…
- Desham – land of patient and the type of his body (vata ,pitta , kapha…
- Balam – mental and physical strength of a patient
- Kalam – Season and internal stage of the disease
- Analam- digestive activity
- Prakriti- The constituition of the patient( vata, pitta, kapha….
- Vayas- age
- Satwam- Mind stability
- Satmyam- those activities or food regimen into which the patient is used to
- Aharam- kind of food take by the patient
All the above mentioned details from Panchamahabhuta to Ayurveda Case sheet is used and the disease is diagnosed and treated in Ayurveda. The treatment is done with natural substances considering their Rasa (taste) , Guna ( quality ), Veerya ( potency ) , Vipaka (transformation after digestion ) and Prabhava ( extra ordinary function of a substance).
Rasa – is taste , Sweet, Sour, Salt, Bitter, Acrid and Astringent, first three cures Vata and second group of three tastes cures Kapha , Sweet, Astringent and Bitter cures Pitta dosha . Quality means- for example - heaviness can be treated with opposite quality medicine having hot nature and lightness . Potency is of two types Hot or Cold , a block in body can be cured with a hot potent drug, temperature can be reduced using a cold potent drug. Vipaka , the form after digestion may lead the major action of the drug example:- Ginger in its Vipaka form becomes Sweet, that sweetness may act sometimes . Prabhava is the extra ordinary function of a medicine, Ghee even if it is cold in Potency activates digestive fire . For becoming a good practitioner , the Knowledge on Rasa , Guna , Veerya , Vipaka and Prabhava of Natural substances is a must.
.
Few examples to start thinking in Ayurveda -
1) For indigestion some natural digestion promoters are given and when cured the patient is suggested to take less amount of food which is easy to digest is an Ayurveda application ( Here heaviness is treated by lightness)
2) Immobilizing a fracture site and giving more fast healing medicines and giving natural calcium and pain killers is an Ayurveda application ( Movement is Stabilised , so opposite quality is used) ( Pain is produced by vata, so natural Analgesic usage is Vatahara action )
3) Staying healthy without using any synthetic product is an Ayurveda regimen. ( Avoiding –unnecessary routine is an Ayurveda aspect)
4) All wholesome acts with assistance of nature can be considered as Ayurveda. Ayurveda is not only a medical system , beyond a medical system, it is a Life science.
Also while practicing Ayurveda always consider proper diet and always avoid Incompatible food. ( Mixing up of heat and cold food, eating upto full stomach, eating heavy mixture of fats etc is Incompatible ) . To do an addition, like health tip or medicine to a human body ,consider vitiated tissue , vitiated humor , strength , digestive capacity , constitution of that person , age etc and do the proper assessment. After assessment find the proper diagnosis and treatment using Ayurveda measures. Understanding the basic principles of Ayurveda or Indian science needs effort , but once you are in
to the system , it is verymuch easy to follow Ayurveda. For detailed knowledge one can start reading translation and explanation of Ashtagahrudaya by Acharya (Guru) Vagbhata from Suthrasthana textbook ( Introduction to Ayurveda).
Welcome to the wholesome World of Ayurveda.
